The view south from the La Quinta Cove resembles an alien landscape. A maze of twisting canyons cut through the serrated ridges. Ocotillos and cacti dot the hillsides. The Boo Hoff Trail, named in 1979 for a long-time member of the Desert Riders, follows a historic Indian footpath through this curious wilderness. This hike makes a remarkable loop: It starts in the La Quinta Cove, climbs onto the north slopes of towering Martinez Mtn., then turns east and descends beside Devil Canyon. As an optional variation, you can descend to the canyon itself. The path then leads to Cahuilla Lake before returning to the Cove on the Morrow Trail.
