The Bump and Grind Trail, also known as the Desert Mirage Trail, is an extremely popular trail because it is so conveniently located in town and offers a vigorous workout over a short distance. On a pleasant weekend, you are likely to meet hundreds of hikers and joggers getting their exercise on the trail, which climbs the northern flank of Shadow Mtn. The trail has been rerouted from its former start in Rancho Mirage because of private property issues. The upper portion crosses the Magnesia Spring Ecological Reserve, and dogs are not allowed, even though you may see this rule being flagrantly violated. Some portions of the trail are quite steep, so shoes with good tread are recommended.
