Park officials describe the City of Fountain Valley’s Mile Square Park as “multifunctional,” which is certainly the case because it packs a lot of attractions into its 640 acres. A by-the-numbers accounting tallies two golf courses, three soccer fields, two fishing lakes, three playgrounds and four softball fields. Oh, and one “Urban Nature Area,” too. An old archery range is being radically and creatively transformed into a 20acre enclave that highlights and interprets the Southland’s diverse ecological communities. The Natural Area, as its known, is well worth a stroll on your own. Or take advantage of the occasional ranger-guided nature walk that tours Palm Island, North Lake and the Natural Area.
