This pair of snow-ringed shimmering lakes is tucked in a glacially scoured basin sprinkled with pumice and dotted with larches high in the stark, grey, towering Entiat Mountains. With perpetual snowfields and silver cascades crashing below and above, the Ice Lakes are a cool oasis in an area of abundant sunshine and frequent wildfires. The approach is long, dusty, hot, and buggy. Fierce waters must be forded, and an insanely steep climb is a final hurdle before you can explore this snowbound, intensely beautiful Shangri-la.
