One of the highest sizeable lakes in the sprawling Alpine Lakes Wilderness, Lake Augusta sits in a large cirque beneath 7763-foot Big Jim Mountain, one of the highest summits along Icicle Ridge. Far less visited than the nearby Mormon Lakes (Trip 41) and Scottish Lakes, Lake Augusta delivers just as much spectacular alpine scenery and wilderness roaming as those popular destinations. Enjoy wildfl owers in summer, golden larches in fall, and excellent wildlife-watching in the Painter Creek valley anytime.
