For Vineyard locals, Trade Wind Fields is definitely the doggie hangout. For visitors, it is a great place to bring your dog for an afternoon stroll or a morning jaunt. PLEASE NOTE: the airport is a working airstrip--dogs and people are not allowed on it. As unusual wildflowers and grasses flourish in this uncommon habitat, be careful to respect the protected flora and fauna at Trade Wind Fields. Many might think that taking a walk around an old airstrip sounds rather unexciting, but this classic sandplain grassland habitat and adjacent woodland provide an exceptionally beautiful place to take a hike. Watch for unusual wildflowers and grasses (bushy rockrose, purple needlegrass, sandplain blue-eyed grass, among others) that flourish in this uncommon habitat.
