Take this easy jaunt along the east bank of the Salmon Falls River almost anytime. Even when the gate is closed during the colder months, you can park along Old Fields Road and hike 0.25 mile to the trailhead. The generally level path follows the riverbank for just under a mile, then loops back to the parking area through airy woodlands. At least one major trail is suitable for strollers. The Shady Stroll Trail, originating at the southeast corner of the parking and picnic area (end closest to the road), starts as a dirt path heading downward. In about 150 yards it comes to a bridge crossing a stream that flows into the Salmon Falls River a little farther downstream. Soon, you will come to a Y-junction in the trail. The Bridle Path (suitable for wheelchairs and strollers) bears to the left and the River Run to the right. Mobile kids will prefer River Run, which wanders through a hemlock and spruce forest along the sloping riverbank.
