Pick your distance: a 2.6-mile “moderate” hike to and from the first overlook, a 3.2-mile “moderate” round-trip hike to Stowe Pinnacle, or a 4.5-mile “challenging” trip to and from the summit of Hogback. Because your best views will come from Stowe Pinnacle, only hardy souls who crave a challenge will push on to the wooded Hogback summit. With two turnaround points in addition to the final destination, you can be a little generous in assessing your family’s abilities. Bring the six- or seven-year-olds who’ve been begging to climb a “real” mountain and see how they do. Even if they poop out at the initial overlook, you’ll all be able to enjoy lovely views of Mount Mansfield and other peaks in the Green Mountains before you head back to your vehicle.
