Water, so fascinating to children and so soothing to adults, is never far away on this hike around pristine Kettle Pond. The narrow trail winds along the gentle terrain of the pond’s northern side with frequent excursions to the water and then tracks over more rugged ground along the less-accessible southern shore. The kids will enjoy a brief visit or an overnight at one of the primitive waterfront shelters (rented for a nominal fee on a first-come, first-served basis at New Discovery State Park in Peacham, just north on VT-232). Bring along a store-bought net or a coat hanger covered with a piece of old nylon stocking to skim the water for aquatic insects. If you would like to view Kettle Pond (and the rest of the expansive Groton State Forest) from above, climb nearby Owl’s Head Mountain.
