Hamilton Falls lies within Jamaica State Park, an area with as much fascinating history as natural beauty. Because the West River helped to link the Connecticut River and Lake Champlain, it was a significant transportation route for Native Americans. Archaeologists have determined that prehistoric Native American activity centered along the riverbanks for more than 8000 years. When European settlers arrived, they farmed the riverside land and logged the surrounding forests, using the swift-running water to power their sawmills. In the late 1800s, the West River Railroad snaked beside the river, connecting South Londonderry and Brattleboro. Dubbed “36 miles of trouble,” the railway was plagued by floods, storms, and other hardships. Today, hikers follow this old railroad bed for much of the way to Hamilton Falls.

All the elevation gain is in a single mile, the last mile to the waterfall. For a very casual hiker, it was a bit tough. But the waterfall makes it worth it.
