Looking to escape the crowds of the Cape or just want a change of scenery from the beach? Try the Theodore Lyman Reserve on Buttermilk Bay. You’ll still get to play on a sandy beach, but you’ll also get to hike near a freshwater stream, and through freshwater wetlands and forested uplands. Red Brook, which flows through the property to Buttermilk Bay, is home to one of the last remaining native sea-run brook trout (“salters”) fisheries on this side of the country. Check rules and regulations before you go, but you may even want to carry along a fishing pole (or at least a stick with a string attached so the kids can “pretend” fish). The reserve was once a fishing camp and honors Theodore Lyman III, who worked hard to protect it.
