The story of Quabbin Reservoir is fascinating to history buffs and naturalists alike. In the 1920s and 1930s, Quabbin was built as a water supply for metropolitan Boston, and its construction involved the “drowning” of four towns: Enfield, Dana, Prescott, and Greenwich. Today, the 3200 acres called Quabbin Park offer visitors an excellent opportunity for wildlife observation (you may even spot a bald eagle). Unlike most hiking routes, this one begins atop a summit and descends to the water’s edge, finishing its loop on a steep ascent to the parking area near the summit tower. Gently rolling terrain combined with fun near the water make this a great hike for kids of most ability levels.
