The forested ravine at O. O. Denny Park is home to eagles, owls, salmon, and huge cedar trees. It’s the first day of spring in Renton’s Waterworks Gardens and the cattails are bursting at their seams, hawks are courting overhead, and the frogs are resonantly awake. Just off I-405 beyond the fast food restaurants and chain superstores is a public art space that acts as a bridge between industry and nature. Looking over Waterworks’ tranquil pools and a significant stretch of wetland, the paradoxical distant views include a cement-recycling plant, heron rookery, box factory, Mount Rainier, and King County’s largest secondary sewage treatment plant.
