It’s hard to believe that twenty lush acres could remain so well hidden in the city, but on a winter weekday you’re likely to find yourself alone in Kubota Garden. Like the concept of kumade in Japanese garden design where a space is teasingly, playfully, only partially exposed to the viewer, you could easily miss the entrance. Just as Kubota’s interior kumade appeal to birds like pileated woodpeckers, barred owls, and cedar waxwings, the garden as a whole serves as refuge for the street-worn senses of Seattle’s two-legged mammals.
