Damp and cloudy many months of the year, Seattle’s climate doesn’t seem much like the balmy southern coasts of Spain or France. But that’s exactly where most garden specialists will point if you ask for comparable conditions. As evidence, they cite city yards in which such Mediterranean stalwarts as rosemary and sage thrive. Our mild winters benefit from the modifying effects of local waters. Our summers, though not as hot as those of southern Europe, are surprisingly dry, more so in the city, where there’s minimal tree canopy and maximum concrete. If gardens full of exotic species don’t convince you that our climate is “pseudo Mediterranean,” Magnolia Boulevard Viewpoints just might change your mind. The park, stretching along the boulevard with stunning views of Puget Sound and the Olympics, was established, along with the boulevard itself, in 1910.
