It might seem peculiar to find a nursery of sorts just a stone’s throw from the Burlington Northern railroad tracks in Magnolia. But swaying here in the tops of several tall alder and maple trees is one of Seattle’s few remaining great blue heron colonies. Known for its pterodactyl-like appearance and unparalleled patience while stalking prey in shallow waters, herons have been raising their gangly broods in Kiwanis Ravine for many years. The ravine is a protected area of nine acres located northeast of the main entrance to Discovery Park. This mostly deciduous stand is home to more than eighty native plant species and is visited by at least fifty-six species of birds.
