The first approx. 6.5km of this trail wind gradually uphill through the forest. The incline is pretty gentle until you get to the E5 campground, when the trail gets a bit steeper. The bugs are horrendous while you're in the forest, but they thin out once you reach alpine. The bugs were particularly bad at E5 campground. The scenery up to this point isn't much - just the forest around you, not bad but nothing special. Once you reach the alpine area the hike improves considerably. You leave the forest and the view opens up to a panoramic vista 360 degrees. The wildflower meadows are beautiful. They were in full bloom on Aug. 1st. The view includes several mountain peaks (Monarch, and the top of Mt. Assiniboine off in the distance), rolling wildflower meadows and several small lakes. The beauty of the pass area makes up for the boring ascent through the forest.
