This is a great walk because of Alfred’s pond and the floating bog with its large variety of plant life. Add to this the spectacular debris flow on the Caribou River, Caribou Falls, the mining pit, kibbles and bits ants nests, lilies, and all the other plants and flowers and we have had a special day. A picnic lunch at Sugarloaf Creek provides an added plus. A relatively easy section so a great day nature walk. To get from the wayside up to the Superior Hiking Trail there are two choices. Having been down the east side of the river (walk 13) we decide to go up the west side. To do this we cross the bridge over the Caribou River to the Superior Hiking Trail sign, and the west spur leading up to the Superior Hiking Trail. This is waypoint 1 though I’m not sure how accurate this is on the GPS for when plotted on a topographic map the point lies on the opposite side of the river! The day is picture perfect, which explains the early morning temperature of 42 degrees. It is now 57 degrees and will get a lot warmer. With low humidity, a clear sky, and light wind this should be a grand walking day.
