sections through nice mixed hardwood forests with groves of large cedar trees; wildflowers abound (this depends on time of year). Egge Lake, with dam and creek, are interesting, and Sonju Lake, with the boardwalk out to a small, rocky island and boundary water-type views, is really neat and the perfect lunch spot. This was also a day dominated by a variety of igneous intrusive rocks. Though all belong to the Beaver Bay Igneous Complex and are part of the Mid-Continent Rift, they represent three separate intrusive events, each of a slightly different age. This “multiple” intrusion phenomenon is common in volcanic areas, and is characteristic of magmas that feed lava flows at the surface. Waypoint 1 and the beginning of the hike are at the junction where one branch of the Superior Hiking Trail heads east to half-dome and Highway 6 (Hike 11), and the other branch goes north to Egge and Sonju lakes then on to Crosby Manitou State Park. The junction is about 0.3 miles from the parking lot at the Finland Recreation Center and is reached via a wellmarked spur trail.
