This is an absolutely great hike; it has a bit of everything––cliffs, canyons, bogs, giant glacial erratics, orchids and more orchids, beautiful old forest, interesting geology, wildflowers, large trees, and a glacially carved landscape. There is an impressive boardwalk that has been constructed over a beaver dam that crosses Sawmill Creek, a glacial erratic of anorthosite that is over 20 feet tall and surrounded by orchids, and great views of “Half-Dome.” The hike ends with a nice walk through the valley that includes the east branch of the Baptism River. This is northern Minnesota at its beautiful best. Take time to note birds and seasonal flowers in bloom. It’s a warm and humid morning with a pale orange sun trying its best to burn off the patchy grey scum that separates its heat from us. It’s officially the first day of summer, and, in honor of this, Judy is dressed in shorts, a tshirt, and sandals. If nothing else I figure she will keep the black flies and mosquitoes happy and away from me.
