A challenging trail that abounds with interesting rocks, flowers, old-growth trees, and scenic views along with a dash or two of history. In many places the walking path follows along the edge of high escarpments through beautiful spruce and balsam forests with a scattering of white pine. In places the rock forming the high ridges is basalt which contains a nice variety of agates as vesicle fillings. There are many steep ascents and descents that take you through a wide variety of forests; birch, maple, ash, and aspen as well as impressive stands of cedars and white pines. The section also traverses part of the Merrill Grade, one of the historic logging railroads. It’s a long walk (about 10 miles total), but with an early start on a nice day well worth the time.
