An easy walk with great views from the long section of trail that follows the top of Bread Loaf Hill (lots of blueberries here). There is also Nelson’s Creek and the new beaver activity, Split Rock Creek and jack-in-the-pulpits, wild flowers that add color to the green of the Canadian carpet, and the final stroll down the Split Rock River and its estuary. Thunderous, that’s the only way to describe the Gooseberry River on this gray, rainy morning. We can hear the river booming from the parking lot, feel its ground-shaking power as we walk past the new visitor’s center; but even that doesn’t prepare us for the real thing. Roaring like a lion where three days ago it meowed like a kitten, water filled the gorge. Hurtling over the upper falls, brown and angry, the river literally tore itself apart; foam, spray, and strings of ragged droplets are flung in all directions, each part of, yet separate from, the crazy river. At the bottom of the falls the river manages to gather all these different parts together to form a wall of churning, brown fury that speeds over the lava flows and down the gorge heading for the lake with the same mad determination a bull has when it charges an armed matador.
