Jean Guite Creek runs along the Outer Bank’s Bodie Island for only 6 miles, making a connection between Currituck Sound near Southern Shores in the north and Kitty Hawk Bay off Albemarle Sound near Kitty Hawk in the south. The stream is fairly protected from wind by a dune system on the coast. It offers a paddling trip through a maritime deciduous swamp, forest, and marsh. It also offers the chance to explore more open water at the ends of the creek. The Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve manages 1,350 acres. South of US 158, most of the land along Jean Guite Creek is within the reserve. It contains a great diversity of wildlife, birds, and rare plants. This eTrail contains 1 section of Jean Guite Creek from Bob Perry Road (Dare Co. 1210) access to US 158 bridge and return.

We launched from Kitty Hawk Kayaks on Rt. 158. They charged us a $5 launching fee, which the guide didn't mention. I would recommend launching instead from the public boat launch on Bob Perry Road in Kitty Hawk. It's free and you can do the same route. It was very quiet, only saw a few other paddlers and NO other boats on the creek. Not a lot of wildlife today, probably too hot for them. But we did see a snowy egret catching fish and some otters and turtles. Great, easy route for a family!
