Drowning Creek is a blackwater stream forming the headwaters of the Lumber River. It begins at an elevation of 700 feet in the Sandhills near Candor and becomes the Montgomery and Moore County border. It flows southeast through sparsely populated land. Much of the 58,000 acres of Sandhills Game Land is in this watershed. Near Southern Pines, the creek forms the northern border of Camp Mackall Military Reservation and 15 miles downstream becomes the Lumber River. This eTrail contains 2 sections of Drowning Creek from US 1 bridge near Pinebluff to Turnpike Road (Scotland Co. 1412) access.
