The Chowan River begins as a large river on the North Carolina border at the confluence of the Nottoway and Blackwater Rivers, 10 miles northeast of Murfreesboro and 10 miles south of Franklin, Virginia. It flows southeast to Albemarle Sound. There is occasional high ground, but it flows through mostly swampy land with cypress and tupelo-gum trees along the banks. Because the Chowan is large and has several public boat ramps, motorboats are frequently seen plying its waters. Groups of poles in the river are used to string nets when herring are in season. Wind can be a major obstacle for paddlers because the river is up to 2 miles wide. This eTrail contains 3 sections of the Chowan River from Old Nottoway Road (VA Southampton Co. 753) access to Cannons Ferry Road (Chowan Co. 1231) access.
