The Haw River is popular for paddling because of its variety of scenery, whitewater, and proximity to the Triangle and Triad population centers. Many rivers are dangerous during high water levels, but the Haw is especially so. Islands and boulders are numerous on many sections.
Powerful currents flow over tree-covered islands creating many strainers. There have been deaths and high profile helicopter rescues. This eTrail contains 8 sections of the Haw River from NC 87 bridge at Altamahaw to Robeson Creek Canoe Access off Hanks Chapel Road (Chatham Co. 1943).
