It surprises most anglers to learn that the South River was one of the first urban trout fisheries in Virginia. Winding first through farmland, the South River gathers steam from feeder creeks and eventually combines with North River to form the South Fork of the Shenandoah. It will come as no surprise, though, that as an urban trout fishery (it runs right through the middle of downtown Waynesboro), the South River has seen its share of abuses in years past. Today, however, conservation groups (like the Shenandoah Valley chapter of Trout Unlimited) and concerned citizens are working together to mitigate the effects on the river of years of industrial pollution and dumping. Types of Fish: Rainbows and browns make up most of the cold water fish here. The South River is also home to smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and bluegill. And don’t be surprised if you land the occasional carp. This fly-fishing chapter describes the "where, when, and how" for fishing in this area. It includes a full-page map and information on the known hatches, suggested equipment to use, the best flies to use, season, limits, nearby accommodations, and camping.
