Most Virginia anglers know of the Rappahannock but know little about its upper reaches—which is why I have dedicated a separate section to the upper Rap in this book. Anglers will find access to the water at Kelly’s Ford near the small town of Remington. Smallmouth bass are the predominant species here, but anglers may also catch shad in the spring once they have moved up past Fredericksburg. Fly anglers can also expect to catch bluegill, ring perch, largemouth, and even the occasional catfish.
