Sourland Mountain Preserve gets its name from the nickname settlers once gave the land. They called the land “sourlands” because the rock soil made farming difficult. And rocky it is to this day. In fact, the trail is covered and surrounded by rocks. There is only one parking lot for the preserve, off East Mountain Road. The trail starts all the way to the front of the parking lot, where there’s a kiosk and obvious markers for where the trail starts. There’s also a portable toilet.
