The 5,100-acre state forest that lies at the center of Martha’s Vineyard is a dynamic place. Native and nonnative plants and the creatures that depend on them for survival eke out a hardscrabble existence on poor soils, buffeted by blustering winds, always at the mercy of both natural and human-caused disturbances. Walking the dirt roads and trails described below gives visitors a chance to learn about and appreciate the processes at work in a sandplain ecosystem. From the trailhead, follow a paved path to the paved bicycle trail, carefully cross it, and then gain a dirt fire lane that heads northeast.
