At just under 30 acres, this preserve boasts three distinct plant communities: black-oak woodland, mesic (damp) woodland, and coastal bank and dune. Also here is a stop along the African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard, marked by a rock with a commemorative plaque. The preserve’s namesake rock sits just offshore in a cove, or bight, on Vineyard Sound and is visible from an overlook atop a coastal cliff. A network of short, easy trails connects these various points of interest; one trail loops most of the way around Marl Pond, a red maple–tupelo swamp.
