Five distinct plant communities are found on this 50-acre preserve: mesic (moist) hardwood forest, successional shrubland, red-maple swamp, mixedoak woodland, and herbaceous grassland. Sample them all on this sometimes-hilly excursion, which traces the length of Fulling Mill Brook between Middle and South roads. The term fulling refers to a process whereby fabric is cleaned and preshrunk before being made into clothing. This process was carried out by early settlers in a waterpowered mill; the source of water was called a fulling-mill brook.

This is a very enjoyable hike - varied terrain, varied scenary within a relatively short and not too strenuous hike. We highly recomened this trail as one of the most interesting and varied available on Martha's Vineyard. It is very well maintained and the notes are very accurate.
