Follow the John Wing Trail to Wing’s Island, a low wooded hill bordered by salt marsh and Cape Cod Bay, and imagine yourself transported back in time. Early settlers harvested salt hay from the marshes and produced salt through evaporation of seawater. Agriculture and fires created large open fields and meadows, which were home to many species of birds and butterflies. A five-year restoration project, begun in 2004, is converting several of Wing’s Island’s woodlands to clearings and will hopefully return some of the species long missing from the area, thus setting back the ecological clock to an earlier era. (If you have time, you can combine this walk with a short stroll on the Lee Baldwin Trail, which leaves from the southeast corner of a parking area just across Route 6A from the museum.)
