This circuit of Boiling Springs Pond, also called Smiling Pool, explores an area beloved by Sandwich native Thornton W. Burgess (1874–1965), creator of Peter Rabbit and other memorable characters in his many books for children. The wooded trails here traverse slopes shaded by a variety of tall trees, including magnificent white pines. The pond itself, mostly hidden from view, is bordered by a swamp, whose vegetation provides a colorful display in fall.
The Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen, operated by the Thornton W. Burgess Society, sit on the pond’s north shore. The nature center features flora and fauna displays, a wildflower garden, and the Robert S. Swain Natural History Library. The Jam Kitchen, established in 1903 by Ida Putnam, still makes jams and jellies the old-fashioned way and functions as a living museum.
