Peppered with a few muscle-burning uphill climbs, this trail is essentially an out-and-back fire road in a preserved open space that borders the cities of Whittier and Hacienda Heights. Several scenic singletrack detours loop back around to the main path. Its wellmaintained trails and panoramic views draw big crowds on weekends. The main trail begins just above a small parking lot off Greenleaf Avenue near a large sign with a map of the area. The elevation gain (and scenic payoff ) starts immediately as you start walking uphill past the fire-road gate. On weekends, you will find yourself surrounded by lots of other exercise hounds in this early part of the hike. The diversity of people on this trail, from serious trail runners to families with toddlers, adds an interesting people-watching element to the experience and restores faith that people are seeking out nature as much as their local malls on any given weekend. This is also a good hiking option if you’re looking to hit the trails alone but wary of the potential dangers of heading off into the wilderness by yourself. It’s hard to get lost, and you’ll rarely find yourself without company along the way.
