Leave the boating and fishing crowds behind as you explore the forests around popular Piney Lake. Before you start your hike, stop in the nature center, which features live reptiles and knowledgeable naturalists. The nature center hosts an astounding 300 programs a year, ranging from presentations for toddlers to senior citizens. Make sure you check out the hummingbird garden and aviary; you can see the birds even when the nature center is closed. The birds you might see include black vultures, turkey vultures, barred owls, great horned owls (the largest resident owl in Maryland), red-shouldered hawks, and red-tailed hawks.

Update only: Fees are now $5 / $10 per vehicle for county residents / non-residents. Since I was hiking solo, I opted to go elsewhere.

Not challenging for the hard core hiker, but a great place to take the family on a very nice nature walk. A variety of trail options.

Well maintained park with diversity of land and water activities. Beautiful lake with trails that hug the shore and drift off into the woods. Ample parking. Concession stand for those who forget their snacks!
