Circle Gunpowder Falls at arguably its prettiest and most scenic section. The wrought iron Masemore Road Bridge was built in 1898. A wooden pole sits just to the left of the bridge, pointing out the white-blazed Gunpowder South Trail. Follow the trail upstream over mossy rocks and fallen tree trunks for 500 feet to the blue-blazed Highland Trail to the left. Head uphill through mountain laurel and along a ridged groove; you’ll see a valley dropping off to the right and Bush Cabin Run heading into Gunpowder Falls. Although mountain laurel is by far the dominant flora along this hike, if you complete the entire circuit, you’ll also pass by river birch, cherry, oak, hemlock, dogwood, and witch hazel.

Nice variety of terrain and nice scenery even in February. Moderate level of difficulty. Some hills and rocks to climb over and there are sections where the trail isn't clearly marked. Some sections of the trail are narrow and there were some icy patches on this trip. I started and ended at the Bunker Hill road trail head. Headed around the west loop towards Pretty Boy Dam. Round trip about 3.5 hours.

A wonderful hike we take many times, and the seasonal changes always provide something new to see. We usually do just one side of the loop, not the whole thing. That makes for a pleasant few hours. We've put a Google Earth kmz file up with the east loop and some pictures. http://www.zakar.com/images/hikes/GunpowderFalls1July07/gpf.kmz

Very nice trail along the river most of the time. Except for 2 short uphills at the beginning very leveled. Great for hot summer days - the trees provide nice shade. You can even take a dip in the river as the locals do. Easy to follow trail except for couple of places where the vegetation took over.
