The largest region by far in either of the Virginias also contains fewer waterfalls than most other regions. That’s because most of the terrain is in the flat Coastal Plain or in the rolling lands of the Piedmont. The larger rivers that flow through this region have already done most of their falling while still in the mountains and foothills. The smaller rivers that form within the region start flat and stay that way all the way to the Chesapeake Bay. The few exceptions occur along the Fall Line, the transition between the Piedmont and the Coastal Plain. You probably won’t plan a waterfall vacation to this region, but read about the waterfalls that are there so you can incorporate them into an otherwise-planned trip.
