If you’re headed to West Virginia, chances are you’ve heard of the New River Gorge Bridge. If you haven’t, surely you’ve seen it in commercials, stunt shows, or an “amazing video” show. This quick tour will take you from the bridge overlooks to its “underlooks,” crisscrossing beneath the bridge along the old route taken by travelers prior to its completion in 1977. As impressive as this bridge is, the real treasure is what it spans. The natural beauty of the New River Gorge and the awe-inspiring human accomplishment of the giant bridge make an interesting contrast. Don’t expect to speed through the sharp curves; they are too steep and too poorly maintained to ride quickly. This ride is all about looking at the bridge and the beauty that surrounds it. Points of interest: New River Gorge Bridge, Canyon Rim Visitor Center, Tunney/Hunsacker Bridge, New River, hiking trails to old mining towns.
