At the bottom of a deep valley between the Catawba Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountain Range, on the flatland next to the Roanoke River, Europeans first saw the Roanoke Valley in 1671. Agriculture brought permanent residents in 1740. In 1882, the town really got a boost when it became the terminus of the Norfolk and Western Railroad. Before the year’s end, 500 residents chartered the town of Roanoke. Today, the Roanoke Valley is home to nearly 300,000 people. With all the great scenery, restaurants, attractions, and a low altitude (which helps to moderate the cool winter temps), it’s no wonder Roanoke is a great place to live. It’s also a motorcyclist’s dream. On one side there’s an interstate highway, making for easy access, and on the other is the internationally acclaimed Blue Ridge Parkway. Roanoke is a fun little town wrapped up in a big city. There’s no way this chapter could include all Roanoke has to offer, but it will serve as a good primer to the area. Ride safe, and enjoy Roanoke!
