This route follows one of the quietest and most scenic routes in western North Carolina. Part of the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway, Wayah Road gets scant traffic despite the fact that it offers views of the Nantahala Gorge, Nantahala Lake, Wayah Bald, and a number of mountain streams. And because it’s lightly traveled, it’s in great condition—with hundreds of twists and turns as you climb and descend Wayah Bald. Points of interest: Nantahala River and Gorge, Nantahala Lake, Wayah Bald and Wayah Crest, Winding Stair Gap overlook (and the two others on US 64), Chatuge Lake, and the Hiwassee River.
