This state park trek gives western Carolina hikers a chance to explore a different environment—the Piedmont-like lands bordering Lake James. This particular hike takes trail walkers along rolling shores, where views open across the clear water with piney peninsulas in the near and the rising Blue Ridge in the distance. Elevation changes are minimal, and the state park offers additional trails and activities, sure to make your trip here a worthwhile endeavor. Hiking here is an excellent winter proposition and enjoyable spring and fall as well. However, hiking at Lake James State Park in the summer can be very hot and boat traffic on weekends can make the lake noisy. Nevertheless, I do suggest coming here for an extended visit, as the park has an excellent walk-in tent camping area in the Catawba River Area of the park as well as drive-up tent camping in the Paddys Creek Area. The camps have hot showers and flush toilets. Trails emanate directly from the campground area, adding to the hiking possibilities.
