This short but scenic hike climbs through rocky woods to an open meadow and historic mountaintop fire tower. Start high and trace a switchback-laden trail through rocky woods. Reach grassy Bearwallow Mountain, where views of the surrounding highlands will stun first-time visitors. From the 4,232-foot-high peak you can backtrack or make a loop using the tower maintenance road. For decades, visitors have been coming up to the top of Bearwallow Mountain, despite its not being officially open to the public. However, the curious want to see the spectacular prospects from the mountaintop, where the Hickorynut Gorge, Lake Lure, and Mount Mitchell can be seen. On especially clear days the Great Smoky Mountains stand to the west. The buildings of downtown Asheville are easily identifiable.
