Hawaii’s not-to-be-missed spectacle is Kilauea, the world’s only “hike through” volcano and one that offers the spectacle of frequent, easily-accessible eruptions. The walk around Crater Rim Drive males you want to reach out and touch the process of creation taking place before your eyes. Kilauea is the best known and most popular of the Big Island’s attractions.
Every day hikers come in the hope of witnessing Pele, the volcano goddess, in one of her outbursts. She is unpredictable and may not be giving her best performance on the day of any particular visit. However, over the past five years, she has been more likely than not to be putting on an act unlike anything you might expect. Mountains spewing fire and red hot ash into the sky and glowing flows of molten lava are awesome to behold, but, even at its tamest, Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park is a fascinating place to go hiking.
