The story of Big Stone Gap is one of boom and bust, of grand plans of outsiders to capitalize on natural resources like coal, iron ore, and timber, only to have those plans dissolve as the minerals and trees were depleted. Today, as tobacco– and even coal– decline, leaders hope tourism and outdoor recreation is the next boon for the area. The area is again capitalizing on homegrown resources. Bluegrass music draws audiences from throughout the region, and The Trail of the Lonesome Pine outdoor drama, based on a novel by a local author, draws thousands to Big Stone Gap each year. The surrounding countryside covers thousands of acres, with miles of trails and dozens of fishing streams in the Jefferson National Forest. It’s one of the few places left where you can spend days without seeing a soul and, if you’re lucky, happen upon one of those early homesteader’s cabins. This eTrail provides detailed information on sights, events, entertainment, shopping, dining, accommodations, and transportation in this area of Virginia.
