Mount Independence was once the site of an important Revolutionary War military compound. Today, remains include the blockhouse, gun batteries, a stockade, and a hospital. The visitors’ center and museum display interactive exhibits featuring military artifacts. Basin Harbor. The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum offers a Revolutionary War gunboat replica, the Philadelphia. (The original is in the Smithsonian.) Burlington sits on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, with several important harbors. Harbor cruises are available and there are many other things to see and do here. Burlington is a good jumping-off place for ski country. If you’d like to try the northernmost ski area in Vermont head for Jay Peak. Finally, the quiet island of Grand Isle a wonderful place to relax and its three parks offer swimming, boating, and camping.
