Green County reminds the traveler of the verdant green hills and meadows of Switzerland. Not only present-day visitors but also early settlers got that same impression. South-central Wisconsin could have been picked up and carried here directly from Europe. Expansive oak and maple woodlands, wide meadows (watch for cows), and slowly flowing rivers and clear trout streams create their own natural story. Even the area's villages and crossroads communities seem to have sprung from the earth. There's always a naturalness in the air. It is seen in spring's first dazzling array of jack-in-the-pulpits, summer's cicada-sounded hikes, autumn's dry-leaf perfuming, or even winter's gray, storm-tossed skies. This part of the state is soothing. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Milwaukee. Each Day Trip includes destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
