Originally called “Prairie Village” due to its proximity to a Potawatomi Indian village, Waukesha is one of the fastest-growing cities in Wisconsin. Located along the Fox River, the town name translates to mean “By the Little Fox.” This active community first received its reputation as a destination in the late 1800s. The area’s mineral springs were thought to hold curative properties. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Milwaukee. Each Day Trip includes destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
