Explorer Jean Nicolet visited Green Bay in 1634 in his search for a route to the Orient. He found an abundance of furs instead, prompting the French government to eagerly claim every inch of the new landscape in order to capture the market. Nicholas Perrot established a trading post here in 1665, which established the region as an economic powerhouse. But the first permanent settlement wasn’t established in Green Bay until 1745. Because of its strategic location in those early days, Green Bay was always factored into the international scene. Green Bay has a strong industrial base, but everyone in Wisconsin knows the city best as the home of the championship Green Bay Packers football team. In the 1920s the Green Bay meatpacking industry provided a name for the city football team. The Packers became one of two charter NFL members, going on to win NFL league championship twelve times and the Super Bowl in 1966, 1967, and 1997. During the football season the state lives and breathes the green and gold, the club’s colors.
