From Sheboygan drive north on I–43 only 27 miles to Manitowoc, the next stop on a day-tripper’s guide for fun near Milwaukee. The freeway parallels the shore of Lake Michigan, although for some of the drive, farmlands and forest to the east will block the view. But when the lake does appear, its multifaceted complexion is delightfully varied: from stormy gray to smooth blue-green. Whenever a fog or mist hangs low over the trees fronting the shore, an element of mystery shrouds this side of Manitowoc County. You can feel the spirits of long-ago Native Americans who had traversed this landscape. To get the real spiritual touch that this land offers, skip the freeway and drive north on Sheboygan County LS. This rustic rural road will become Manitowoc County LS (Lakeshore Road, meandering through the crossroads village of Cleveland and just to the east of Newton along Manitowoc County U).
